Montgomery kicks Cal F Amoke off team

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP)—California starting forward Omondi Amoke has beendismissed from the team by coach Mike Montgomery for violating team rules.
Amoke had been suspended indefinitely since March 17, before theeighth-seeded Golden Bears beat Louisville in the first round of the NCAAtournament. Cal made the announcement Friday that he was dismissed from theteam, but provided no further details.
Cal is coming off its first Pac-10 regular-season title in 50 years.
Amoke, a 6-foot-7 sophomore, moved into the starting lineup late in theseason and started 14 games. He averaged 4.8 points and 4.6 rebounds.

Wisconsin extends Ryan through 2016

MADISON, Wis. (AP)—Wisconsin men’s basketball coach Bo Ryan has received aone-year contract extension and women’s basketball coach Lisa Stone received atwo-year extension.
Men’s hockey coach Mike Eaves’ also received a one-year extension Friday.
Athletic department spokesman Justin Doherty said the athletic board decidedto extend Ryan’s rolling contract through May 2016. Doherty said financial termswere not finalized.
Ryan has been working under a contract that guarantees him more than $1.25million per year. The Badgers finished 24-9 this past season, losing in thesecond round of the NCAA tournament to Cornell. They are 217-82 in Ryan’s nineseasons as coach.

Washington gets 2 recruits from Portland

SEATTLE (AP)—Washington has picked up a pair of highly regarded recruits forthe 2010-11 season out of Portland’s Jefferson High School.
Washington confirmed Friday evening it had received a national letter ofintent from 6-foot-5 guard Terrence Ross. At a news conference earlier in theday at Jefferson, 6-foot-9 forward Terrence Jones also announced he plans toattend Washington.
NCAA rules prohibit Washington officials from commenting on Jones until theyreceive his letter of intent.
Jones averaged 32 points and 13 rebounds per game this season and helpedJefferson to a third consecutive state title. He was rated among the top 20 highschool recruits in the country. He also was considering five other schools:Kansas, Kentucky, Oregon, Oklahoma and UCLA.
Ross played with Jones at Jefferson as a sophomore before transferring to aschool in Maryland. He returned to Jefferson midway through his senior season inhopes of playing with Jones but could not play due to transfer rules.
“Terrence Ross is rare in that he possesses a high-level combination ofathleticism and is yet an outstanding shooter. He’s just scratching the surfaceas how good he can be,” Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said in a statement.“He will definitely help with us trying to become a better shooting basketballteam. He gives us instant help in that regard.”

NCAA ends en-masse recruiting trips

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP)—The en-masse spring recruiting trips by Auburn and otherschools have come to an end.
The NCAA passed a rule Thursday allowing a school to send only two coachesto a school on the same day during an evaluation period. NCAA spokeswoman StaceyOsburn says it is effective immediately and originated with the Big EastConference.
Groups of Auburn assistants have done the so-called “Tiger Prowl” to stateand area high schools in limousines the past two springs. Auburn has also used abus for fan events during the jaunts this spring, though not for campus visits.
The NCAA didn’t mention Auburn directly but notes multiple coaches oftenvisit schools “in limousines and extravagant buses” and that the visits are asmuch to make a splash as to evaluate prospects.

Mississippi F Holloway leaving team

OXFORD, Miss. (AP)—Mississippi basketball coach Andy Kennedy sayssophomore forward Murphy Holloway is leaving the team for personal reasons.
Holloway, a 6-7 forward from Irmo, S.C., said Friday that he was returningto South Carolina where he has a daughter and family.
Holloway averaged 10.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game last season,starting 30 of 34 games for the Rebels. He also blocked 24 shots and was theRebels’ most consistent post player.
Murphy ranked fifth in the SEC this season in rebounding and eighth insteals (1.5). He finished sixth among league players with eight double-doubles.
As a freshman, Holloway played in all 31 games and ranked 13th among SECplayers in rebounding. He averaged 6.6 boards, 8.4 points, 0.9 assists and 1.2steals per game.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP)—Hofstra suspended basketball coach Tim Welsh on Fridayafter learning through media reports that police had charged him with drivingwhile intoxicated earlier in the morning.
School spokeswoman Melissa Connolly said Welsh has been suspended withoutpay “effective immediately” while the university investigates the chargesagainst him.
Hofstra hired Welsh in late March. He also coached at Providence and Iona,and spent the past two seasons as a commentator for ESPNU.
Nassau County police said Welsh was found stopped in his Lexus about 1 a.m.at a steady green light at an intersection in Levittown. He was taken intocustody and charged with DWI, then later arraigned, where he pleaded not guilty.
Welsh did not answer a call seeking comment and his voicemail box was full.His attorney, Joseph Coluccio, did not immediately return a call for comment. Hetold Newsday that “we’re going to fight this in court.”
Welsh is due back in court May 4.

Cline leaves Oklahoma staff for Marshall

NORMAN, Okla. (AP)—Add assistant coach Mark Cline’s name to a growing list ofpeople leaving Oklahoma’s basketball program during a massive overhaul.
Cline took a similar position at Marshall on Thursday, becoming the secondassistant to leave Jeff Capel’s staff following a 13-18 season. The Sooners havealso seen three players declare themselves eligible for the NBA draft, onedecide to transfer and another quit to be with his family.
Cline had been one of Capel’s assistants for seven years—three at VirginiaCommonwealth and four at Oklahoma. But the 45-year-old says he couldn’t pass upthe opportunity to return to his native West Virginia.
He is the third assistant hired by new Marshall coach Tom Herrion, joiningBill Barton and Dino Presley.

Bridgepoint to sponsor Holiday Bowl

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Bridgepoint Education is the new title sponsor of the HolidayBowl.
The San Diego company, which runs Ashford University and University of theRockies, signed a deal through the 2012 game, with an option for 2013.
Pacific Life Insurance Co. had been the title sponsor for the last eightyears. The Holiday Bowl is scheduled for Dec. 30.
